The Village Walk series offers gentle routes through the Akaroa reserves, visiting places of historic interest such as the French Cemetery and the Britomart Monument where the British raised the Union Jack just before the French arrived. Families with children will enjoy the Garden of Tane, exploring a myriad of tracks to discover special trees, the old fashioned play ground and the atmospheric cemeteries. For the more ambitious walkers the Country Walk series offers routes ranging from two hours to all day, Walk the Woodills track and stop half way at quirky Tree Crop Farm for refreshments, or branch up to the Heritage Park. For a real leg stretcher climb 800m to the top of Stony Bay Peak behind Akaroa, and appreciate views stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Southern Alps.
To see conservation in action, visit one of the numerous Department of Conservation reserves on the peaks around the harbour or the truly inspirational Hinewai Reserve which offers 20 kilometres of well mapped tracks from summit to sea level, including stands of old growth trees and huge areas of young regenerating bush. The highway ends at Akaroa the oldest colonial town in the South Island, and famed as New Zealand's sole French Settlement. There are activities for everyone including wildlife cruises, eco friendly sailing cruises, swimming with the dolphins, boat hire, paddle boats, fishing and sea kayaking. There are also Penguin colony tours, horse trekking and mountain bike riding.
