COPD causes shortness of breath of varying severity, a cough often with phlegm and sometimes a wheeze. Being well informed about COPD can help a person manage the condition better and maintain their quality of life. There are supports in the community that can help strengthen a person physically, emotionally and socially to continue living a full life with COPD. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an eight week course provided in the community that provides individuals with the necessary understanding and skills to manage their COPD.
Asthma is a condition that affects the small airways in the lungs that carry air in and out of the body. Medications Medications can help prevent the airways from over reacting to triggers and can also help relieve the tightness and swelling in the airways. Asthma medication is usually taken via an inhaler and it may be necessary to take more than one type of medication to help control the asthma. Your asthma educator or doctor can provide a management plan but it is important to have it reviewed at least twice a year.
A warm, dry home Many asthma patients benefit from a living in a warm, dry home. Community Energy Action Charitable Trust ww. nz can help with financial assistance for insulation and efficient heating with higher subsidies for those on a low income
