Canterbury Sheepskin is proudly made in New Zealand by Canterbury Leather International Ltd our company that was established way back in 1974. has earned its reputation for well made sheepskin footwear, apparel and accessories, both in New Zealand and international markets. We source premium hides to bring you the highest quality sheepskin boots and accessories. Canterbury Leather International Limited has been manufacturing for other brands for many years.
As Deckers moved to centralize their manufacturing base to China late in 2011, we are now in the unique position to supply our high quality Canterbury Sheepskin brand and contract manufactured products to a much wider global market. Canterbury Leather International CLI was founded in 1974 by Doug Gill Price. Canterbury Leather International CLI was founded in 1974 by Doug Gill Price, and originally focused on manufacture and export of sheepskin footwear, garments and accessories. This market changed steadily during the late 1980’s as first the Turkish, then Korean and finally Chinese manufacturers moved into the manufacture of sheepskin garments.
However demand was still strong for high priced, premium end, New Zealand manufactured garments, particularly with the Asian tourists to Australia and New Zealand. Deckers were originally manufacturers with plants in the USA Costa Rico and Mexico, but as their sales grew they have increasingly focused on the design, sales and distribution functions, and outsourced most manufacturing to China, whilst the manufacture of high end UGG product remained in New Zealand. Many people in the business still remember the 40 or so pairs that were custom made for Oprah and her team. In 2005 Ugg Australia really took off in the USA and production demand was huge on CLI. Doug Price and some of the CLI team members went to China with Deckers to help train up some of the Chinese footwear factories to help meet the growing demand.
Since purchasing the business it has been focused its long term sustainability by building its own brands and on bringing innovative new sheepskin styles to its world wide customers. We are now focused on production, marketing and sales of our own brands and contract manufacture of some niche sheepskin brands distributed around the world. He’s our Market Services Manager and looks after all our day to day customer needs. Beyond talking to our customers Graham looks after many of the key tasks that make things tick from a meeting the customers needs perspective.
He’s been working in the business since he left school which was over 30 years ago and has worked in almost every part of the factory in his time here. Martyn is a very accomplished golfer at the weekend and also has a real passion for motorcycles. From humble beginnings in 1974 the people at Canterbury Leather International have produced New Zealand’s world famous sheepskin product of the highest quality, craftsmanship and heritage. Then late in September 2009 the team decided they wanted to share their enduring passion for sheepskin hand crafted apparel, footwear and accessories by launching and releasing a special brand Dominion New Zealand . Dominion New Zealand was uniquely created for the discerning international markets and is a personal statement that the team in Canterbury wants the world to experience.
Dominion was o fficially launched in Milan, Italy in March 2010 and now has representation in the US, UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Korea, Japan and is now establishing a presence in China. All footwear, apparel and accessories are warranted for one year against defective materials and workmanship
