Ferrymead Heritage Park was formed in the 1960's by a group of local heritage enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the past for future generations to enjoy. Their legacy and ongoing work by volunteers and staff, with support of the community, has made Ferrymead a valuable place to experience and enjoy the past. Ferrymead Heritage Park is located in an area of rich historical significance. The area was used by European settlers who, after arriving in Lyttelton and walking over the bridle path, travelled over the Heathcote river on a ferry by the meadow and walked down Ferry Road to their new life in Christchurch.
Ferrymead was also the site of New Zealand's first public railway commissioned in 1863. Ferrymead Heritage Park was formed in the 1960's by a group of local heritage enthusiasts dedicated to preserving the past for future generations to enjoy.
