The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand IAANZ is the Professional flight training division of New Zealand's largest Aero Club, the Canterbury Aero Club established 1928. The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand holds New Zealand Qualification Authority NZQA and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority NZ CAA Part 141 approval for flight training. The Academy is unique in that it operates from a large international airport, with full instrument approach aids. The experience gained in this airline environment gives our graduates a significant advantage when pursuing an aviation career.
Our Location We are located in Christchurch City at The Harewood Aviation Park, on the West side of Christchurch International Airport, about 8km from the centre of the city. The Air New Zealand Aviation Institute's First Officer Programme which started in 2012 and provides one of the few truly airline integrated training pathways for flight crew of the future. Designed primarily for airlines who seek a training partner that understands the airline business and maintains the same professional standards and integrity as their own organisation, the First Officer Programme delivers tomorrow's systems savvy flight deck managers. Following a joint cadet selection process undertaken by the customer airline and the Aviation Institute, initial training through to Commercial Pilot Licence with a Multi Engine Instrument Rating is provided by the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand Ltd and four other partner flight training organisations PFTO's geographically spread across New Zealand.
Partner flight training organisations have been appointed following a rigorous review of their organisation, flight training programmes and their ability to meet Air New Zealand Aviation Institute standards. Cadets graduating from this phase of training then transition into the Airline Integration Course AIC for an in depth understanding of the commercial airline flight deck and its array of systems, the interactions they will have with fellow crew and airline personnel and the range of factors and influences that will drive their decision making processes. Following successful completion of the Airline Integration Course, graduates are well placed to handle the demands of the final stage their first Turbo Prop or Jet Rating endorsement. Customer airlines may request specific outcomes for their cadets but it is expected that graduates will have completed the following on graduating . New Zealand Commercial Pilot Licence with a Multi Engine Instrument Rating CPL MEIR New Zealand Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory subjects offered in June August each year Airline Integration Course Jet or Turbo Prop Type Rating New Zealand Diploma in Aviation.
The Academy is located at Christchurch, the second largest city in New Zealand, and the largest in New Zealand's South Island. Meandering rivers, tree lined avenues, numerous parks and gardens, and friendly people are aspects that contribute to Christchurch being rated among the Top 10 Tourist Cities in The World Travel and Leisure Magazine . Christchurch has easy access to beaches, golf courses, ski and snowboard fields, diving, white water rafting, sporting and many other recreation activities

From start through to Commercial Pilot Licence, this 10 month programme is suitable for students interested in a career in scenic and agricultural operations. NZQA approved for 26 weeks and based on 65 hours flight time, the Private Pilot Licence PPL is a requirement for a Commercial Licence and this 6 month programme allows the student to obtain a Private Pilot Licence and all Commercial Pilot theory subjects. Costs for this elective include the air instruction components Instructional Techniques Practical, Instructional Techniques Theory, Aerodynamics, Pre Flight Briefings, exams and flight tests. The exam is taken at the end of the course and a certificate is issued for those who pass this rating.
