What you should know about Karate Christchurch

Art in Christchurch, Karate in Christchurch

Having said that, the level of competitors was high with all our club competitors having a good competition. This is a great competition for all levels especially those that haven't had much experience in competitions. At the end of this week I was fortunate to pass my 6th Dan grading for Jitsuei Kai. George Sensei also passed and is now graded to 5th Dan JKF Goju Kai, so well done to both Sensei’s as they have both put a lot of time and effort in the build up to their grading. This tournament was very big, with nine mats going continuously from the start of day one to the end of day two. This is the club's big fundraising event of the year so it will be great if you can get behind it. This is the Association’s big fundraising event of the year so please support it. A big thank you for Sensei Dean and Sophie for coaching the team and the senior students for helping out. A reminder it’s open to all karate ka from Jitsuei Kai Karate no matter what their experience or what dojo they train at. Students are most welcome to compete in Australia but it will be without the assistance of a sensei or the Association as we are starting from zero funds this year and won't have funds available to support competitors to this competition.
This is the Association’s big fundraising event of the year so please support it. A reminder all students need to be a member of the JKF Goju Kai NZ Association to train and grade with Jitsuei Kai Karate. The championships had 140 competitors up from 80 last year , with Jitsuei Kai providing 28 of them our biggest team ever! This is achieved through self discipline and mutual trust with the regular practice of exercises, movements Kata and sparring Kumite . In the beginning Sensei Pat studied the style of Goju Ryu Karate in Singapore under the expert tuition of Sensei H Horiuchi at the Metropolitan YMCA from 1974 to 1976. Pat founded Shi Sei Kan Karate Do, a dojo teaching traditional Karate at the Christchurch YMCA in 1980. Since then he and his instructors have taught thousands of students, including a significant number who have achieved national and international honors.
Pat returned to Japan many times for training at a number of dojo, developing his knowledge and understanding of the traditional Goju Ryu Karate Do before his passing in December 2015. In October 2009 the name was changed to Jitsuei Kai which comes from the kanji or characters of the family names of Tanaka Sensei and Maekawa Sensei, the two 8th dan masters heading Jitsuei Kai in Japan. Pat McGregor Shihan founded Shi Sei Kan Karate Do, a dojo teaching traditional Karate at the Christchurch YMCA in 1980. Since then he and his instructors have taught thousands of students, including a significant number who have achieved national and international honors.
Pat Shihan passed away in December the club continues to operate being run by a group of his senior students, Dean Wiseman Sensei 6th dan black belt , George Glausiuss Sensei 5th dan , Sophie Savill Sensei 4th dan Gary White Sensei 4th dan . Pat returned to Japan many times for training at a number of dojo, developing his knowledge and understanding of the traditional Goju Ryu Karate Do before his passing in December 20115
