Retail NZ formally recognises outstanding service and or contribution to the organisation, by awarding Life Membership to any person who has given conspicuous service to the retail sector. Life members include those recognised under the previous guises of the New Zealand Retail Federation and the New Zealand Retailers Association. As well as representing the interests of all retailers, big and small, Retail NZ incorporates five specialty trade groups . The New Zealand Sporting Goods Association is a trade membership association made up of suppliers and retailers formed in 1987 to help strengthen and integrate the activities of members involved in the sports industry. The Pet Industry Association of New Zealand is a specialist trade group within Retail NZ. PDANZ is a non profit organisation dedicated to representing and promoting the interests of Merchants, Manufacturers, and Suppliers to the New Zealand Plumbing Industry.
Recognising those who have excelled in developing, manufacturing and supplying new products and services to the plumbing distribution industry at the Annual Industry Awards Dinner. All Merchants, Manufacturers, and Suppliers to the Plumbing Industry are eligible to join. With around 5,00 members, Retail NZ is the leading retail trade association with a membership that represents over 65 of retail industry turnover. Retail NZ assists its members by providing retail advice, member benefit savings, industry information and education.

Educate and assist our members to operate effective, profitable and successful businesses. Membership is by approval of application to the NZSGA Executive Committee and by payment of an annual subscription fee to RetailNZ. Communicate with members through newsletters featuring industry and product information including the latest P. technological advancements relative to the jewellery industry and to provide up to date information on education and training opportunities. Our industry developed on job training programmes give people working in your retail or distribution business valuable skills and knowledge that are immediately relevant and can be put to use in the workplace.
Each member of the Association provided a list of all their undesirable customers. Six national trade groups, representing the various types of stores in the Federation, were established. For many years the Federation, through its subsidiary organisation, the New Zealand College of Retailing, was very active in staff training. In the 1960's it extended its work to include retail management training, particularly for smaller store owners.
In 2015 the New Zealand Retailers Association became Retail NZ and rebranded into the organisation you know today. However, you may be surprised to learn that we can trace our roots back more than 130 years. The Otago Daily Times newspaper of the day reported that the Retailers Association came into being because many retailers were having trouble receiving payment for invoices and credit notes.
The retailers felt they were victims of 'dishonest customers' whom they had trusted by extending credit. The customers instead of paying their bills were thought to be squandering their money on the theatre, horse racing and various other follies . The Dunedin Retailers Association was formed as a way for retailers to provide mutual protection for each other. Each member of the Association provided a list of all their undesirable customers. A 'blacklist' was formed, printed and circulated amongst the members who could deal appropriately with bad customers, by refusing both service and credit.
A Dominion newspaper article of the day reported that it was involved in formulating a list of retail holidays, pricing, support and justice by petitioning parliament. The Federation comprised of 15 nationwide district Associations, who all remained completely autonomous. Six national trade groups, representing the various types of stores in the Federation, were established. They were subordinate to the council in matters of national policy, but autonomous in matters affecting their own trading sphere.

An important part of what we do at Retail NZ is representing the retail sector.
