Polycut Products provides polystyrene in various forms for the building, packaging, signage or display industries. Polycut Products holds a large range of sizes in stock in both Standard and H grades polystyrene. Expanded Polystyrene EPS is a lightweight cellular plastics material consisting of small spherical shaped particles containing about 98 air. This microcellular closed cell construction provides EPS with excellent insulating and shock absorbing characteristics. EPS is produced in a wide range of densities providing a varying range of physical properties.
EPS is widely used in many everyday situations, house insulation, wall and floor insulation packaging signage and display, where its light weight, strength, thermal insulation and shock absorption characteristics provide economic, high performance products. EPS has exceptional insulation properties, with a thermal resistance R value of 1. EPS exhibits excellent shock absorption characteristics making it the first choice for packaging of a wide range of products including appliances, electronic products, computers and chemicals. Equally in building situations, this lightweight characteristic is a major advantage in providing structural design economies. It has limited resistance to paraffin oil, vegetable oils, diesel fuel and Vaseline.
EPS has been used throughout the world for over 40 years in an extremely wide range of applications. Manufacturers have developed and refined processes so products are consistent and of a high quality. In the first stage, polystyrene beads are expanded to between 40 and 50 times their original volume by heating to about 100 degrees Centigrade with steam in an enclosed vessel called a pre expander. Following pre expansion the beads have a partial vacuum which must be equalised before final processing by allowing air to diffuse into the beads until equilibrium is reached.
In the third stage of processing, known as the moulding stage, beads are conveyed into a mould, and once in the mould are heated again by the introduction of steam. However, as they are contained in a mould they cannot expand freely, and therefore create an internal pressure within the mould. These are subsequently cut into shapes or sheets for use predominantly in packaging and in construction. The second moulding process is known as Shape Moulding, and produces shaped parts ready to use in a wide range of applications.
Electronic product packaging in particular is where shaped moulded EPS is used extensively. Computers, office machines, televisions and stereo equipment are everyday examples. Physical Location 10 March Place Belfast Christchurch 8051 Postal Address PO Box Northwood Christchurch
