What you should know about Beckenham School
Children describe the school as a safe and happy place to be and there is a very positive tone in the playground and classrooms. A Restorative Practice’ approach forms the basis of the school’s behaviour management system. Strong relationships are recognised as being fundamental to the success of the school and its teaching and learning programmes. Beckenham School staff enjoy professional relationships and work closely with educators at other local schools.
We have worked with our community, students, staff and Board of Trustees to understand the essence of what we see as our purpose, our vision, and the values that underpin that vision, to take our school into the next years. The story that we are referencing in our logo, and in the development of our vision, begins before the history of the school and takes us back to the pre European days of Waitaha Canterbury . This cultural narrative states The story for the school lies within place’ and is endowed within the landscape. The river was an important travelling route, and the area around Beckenham an important resting place for Ng i Tahu travelling between Kaiapoi and Horomaka Banks Peninsula . Mahinga kai, and the associated custom of kai hau kai exchange of food resources , is of central importance to Ng i Tahu culture and identity. Traditional mahinga kai practice involved the seasonal migration of people to key food gathering areas to gather and prepare food and resources to sustain them throughout the year.
Here it references the gathering of food mahinga kai , to fill the kete a metaphor for our vision. We want Beckenham School to be a place where all learners are able to fill their kete basket for the journey’ and be able to do this in many ways collectively and individually, through teaching, exchanging of stories, sharing of ideas, and working together to create new learning and knowledge. The colours are the original school colours of red, black and gold, selected by the founders of the school and taken from the colours of the Belgian flag, to honour the sacrifices being made during the First World War by the soldiers of both Belgium and New Zealand. Red and black are also the colours Canterbury province and gold symbolises excellence.

Beckenham School opened in 1915 with 149 pupils and a staff of four following lobbying to the Canterbury Education Board by the Beckenham Burgesses’ Association who argued that it was too dangerous for Beckenham children to cross Colombo St tramlines to attend Somerfield School. The school roll and its buildings grew rapidly so that by 1928 the school roll reached 562. The old brick building was demolished in 1979 and new Cebus style classrooms were built. During 200, the istration block was further upgraded to the new building standard, and stage 2 of the hall completed with the development of a new entrance, reception foyer, kitchen and multi purpose classroom suitable for science, technology, art and music activities.
In 2009 a new resource, office and small group teaching space was added to the Junior block as a partial second story. This was funded through roll growth and property funding for junior roll ratios. Community support and generous donations of money, books and time saw the library collection rebuilt during 2013
